7th African Regional Indaba On Binding Treaty On Business and Human Rights
The SCMAC core team was invited and participated during the 7th AFRICAN REGIONAL INDABA ON BINDING TREATY ON BUSINESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS in Johannesburg on the 28/29 May 2025 on the theme Strengthening civil society mobilisation project.
Coordinator Katlego malesa was part of the panel discussion on corporate impunity and Africa’s fight for accountability highlighting and giving example on the recent cases of corporate human rights violation and spoke about the relocated community members of magobading that were arrested when raising their concerns to the mine about their cracked houses and falling sealings where they ended up not being attended to but instead they called the police on them and they were arrested and spend two weeks in jail for wanting to speak to the management and raising their grievances. spoke as well also on the strategy for legal accountability and importance of the binding treaty where she mentioned that the treaty should accommodate communities and also have a platform for community members to raise their own issues instead of organisation speaking on their behalf, also said the binding treaty on business and human rights must place our lived experiences on human rights violations by corporations in the extractive sectors at the forefront.
